What amber means in perfume

Amber in perfume has nothing to do with the fossil stone. It's an accord, a blend usually made from labdanum, benzoin and vanilla, and it smells warm, resinous and slightly sweet. Older guides call this family oriental. Think of a warm shawl, resin smouldering in a dish, or skin at the end of a long evening.

Amber scents are dense and they project well, which is why they rule the winter wedding season. They hold up through a long mehndi and the cold drive home afterwards. In peak summer they can feel heavy, so keep them for evenings or air-conditioned rooms.

Amber gets along with almost everything. With oud it turns rich and regal. With vanilla and tonka it becomes sweeter and more comforting. With saffron or cinnamon it gets warmer and easier to notice from across a room.

Good places to start: Bourbon Blush, Overdose and No Regrets.

Amber Fragrances: Frequently Asked Questions

Warm, resinous and softly sweet, a bit like vanilla mixed with a balsamic, lightly smoky resin. It's cosy rather than fresh.
