Spice, the way perfumers use it

Spicy fragrances use the same things you'd find in a masala dabba: cardamom, saffron, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, nutmeg and ginger. In perfume they add heat and edge. Pepper makes an opening crackle, cardamom brings a cool, green warmth, and saffron adds a leathery, honeyed glow.

Spice is rarely the whole story. It usually sits on top of woods, amber or oud and wakes them up. That's why many fragrances here also appear in our woody and amber collections. The spice is what makes the first impression.

Lighter spices like pink pepper, cardamom and ginger work all year and are fine for the office. Warm spices like cinnamon, clove and saffron are richer and better for evenings, winter, and occasions where you want to be noticed.

Good places to start: Spiced Tobacco, Ember Elixir and Second Skin.

Spicy Fragrances: Frequently Asked Questions

In perfume it's grouped with the spices, but it isn't hot like pepper or clove. It smells warm, slightly leathery and honey-like, and it pairs beautifully with oud and rose.
