Fragrance Ingredient

Bergamot

The bright citrus opener that launches more fragrances than any other top note.

At a Glance

  • Top note: the opening impression, typically lasting 30–90 minutes
  • Simultaneously citrus, floral, and slightly green-spicy
  • The defining aroma compound in Earl Grey tea
  • Pairs with almost anything — florals, woods, musks, and orientals

What It Smells Like

Fresh citrus with a distinctive floral, slightly spicy quality that distinguishes it from lemon or orange. If you have had Earl Grey tea, you have smelled bergamot — the characteristic greenish-floral citrus note in the tea is bergamot oil. In a fragrance, it opens a composition with immediate brightness before drying down to let the heart notes speak.

Where It Comes From

Nearly all of the world's bergamot oil comes from the Calabria region of southern Italy, where the fruit (Citrus bergamia) grows almost exclusively. The oil is cold-pressed from the rind of an inedible bitter citrus fruit harvested in December and January. Italian bergamot from Reggio Calabria is considered the benchmark.

When to Wear It

Spring and summer especially, morning and daytime wear, office environments, and any context where freshness matters. Bergamot is a top note, meaning it is the first impression a fragrance makes and typically fades within an hour or two — but it sets the character for everything that follows. Bergamot-heavy colognes and light EDTs are perfect for Pakistani summers.

In Perfumery

Bergamot is the handshake of perfumery — it is how nearly every fine fragrance introduces itself. Its brightness is precise and never harsh; it opens compositions without dominating them. Many of our fresh and aromatic formulas at Scents By Izhaan begin with a bergamot top note, which allows the heart — rose, amber, or sandalwood — to emerge gradually and with more impact.
