Fragrance Ingredient

Sandalwood

Creamy, warm, and endlessly wearable — the base note that pairs with everything.

At a Glance

  • Creamy, smooth, and warm — contrasts with sharper woody notes
  • Excellent fixative with its own distinct character
  • Pairs with virtually any other material in the perfumer's palette
  • Mysore sandalwood is rare; quality synthetics have largely replaced it

What It Smells Like

Smooth, milky, and slightly sweet with a warm woody creaminess that is entirely its own. Unlike cedar's dry sharpness or vetiver's smoky earthiness, sandalwood is the soft one — almost skin-like in its gentleness. The best Mysore sandalwood has a faint rosy facet that gives it unexpected complexity.

Where It Comes From

The world's most prized sandalwood comes from Mysore in the Karnataka state of India (Santalum album). Wild Indian sandalwood is now strictly regulated due to over-harvesting, making genuine Mysore oil extremely rare and valuable. Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) and Hawaiian sandalwood are quality alternatives with slightly different profiles. Most commercial sandalwood today uses synthetic santalols like Javanol or Osyrol.

When to Wear It

All seasons — sandalwood is perhaps the most genuinely versatile base note in perfumery. It works under florals in spring, under aquatics in summer, and anchors heavier oriental blends in winter. Its creamy warmth reads as approachable rather than demanding, making it an excellent choice for daily wear across professional and social contexts.

In Perfumery

Sandalwood is the base note a perfumer reaches for when they want depth without dominance. It holds a blend together the way musk does, but it contributes its own creamy warmth rather than simply amplifying what is above it. Many of our everyday-wear formulas at Scents By Izhaan are built around a sandalwood and musk base — a combination that provides quiet elegance that does not demand attention but rewards closeness.
