What It Smells Like

Where It Comes From
Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) is a grass native to India, grown for its fragrant roots rather than its blades. Haiti produces the world's most highly regarded vetiver for Western perfumery, with a cleaner and more refined smoky quality than other origins. India's khus oil, produced primarily in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, has been used in South Asian perfumery for thousands of years — in attars, in vetiver-woven cooling screens (khus khus tatties), and in traditional summer colognes.
When to Wear It
Autumn and winter evenings are vetiver's strongest season, though Indian khus has a long tradition as a summer note — its green, smoky coolness was used to combat heat long before air conditioning. Vetiver reads as serious and considered rather than approachable and sweet, making it best suited to someone who knows their fragrance preferences and wants something distinctive.
